Includes the text of Pearse’s celebratedpanegyric delivered at Ros-
sa’s grave in 1915. When Pearse gave this oration on 1st August,
he gave notice of the nationalist unrest: “Life springs from death
- and from the graves of patriotmen andwomen spring living na-
tions. TheDefenders of this Realmhaveworkedwell in secret and
in theopen.They think that theyhavepacified Ireland.They think
theyhavepurchasedhalfofusand intimidated theotherhalf.They
think theyhave foreseen everything, think that theyhaveprovided
against everything; but the fools, the fools, the fools! - theyhave left
us our Fenian dead, andwhile Ireland holds these graves, Ireland
unfree shall never be at peace”.

Fr.O’Flanaganwas an active supporterof the independencemove-
ment from theearlydaysof SinnFéin, andplayeda largepart in the
crucial election campaign of 1918. He remained with the purists
after the Treaty, and led the opposition at the Sinn FéinArdfheis
of 1925 toDeValera’s proposal for a flexible approach to theOath.
Hewasoften in troublewithhis religious superiors, andhispriestly
functions were suspended for a time. His other activities includ-
ed the publication of JohnO’Donovan’sOrdnance Survey Letters.
This pamphlet by Sceilg, (J.J. O’Kelly), his friend for over forty
years,makes specialmentionof his time inAmerica andAustralia
andof his suspensionby theChurch authorities.
