1916 Volunteer and internee of Frongach and Ballykinlar. A large and
interestingcollection including: aportrait ofMallon, half length, inVol-
unteer uniform by Thomas Kain, oil on canvas, 50 x 37cm, signed and
dated (The artist was amember of theCitizenArmy, andwas himself a
1916 Volunteer); postcards from his wife Florence to himwhile in Bal-
lykinlar; rare ‘Statements of Account’ from Ballykinlar; visiting slips;
Photographs, including one depictingMallon and a crowd at Griffith’s
grave;Armydocumentsandephemera; printedmaterial, etc. JamesMal-
lon, born inBelfast, lived at George’sQuay in central Dublin and had a
hairdressing business in Eden Quay nearby. He was married with one
son, Ernest. Amember of the IrishVolunteers since 1913, he served in
the 1916Rising under EamondeValera at Boland’sMillswith ‘B’ Com-
pany, 3rdBattalion, DublinBrigade. After theRisinghewas interned at
Wakefield andFrongoch, wherehewas known as ‘theFrongochBarber’.
Hewas a SinnFein candidate atDublinmunicipal elections in1920 and
in 1921 hewas again interned at Ballykinlar. After independence James
Mallon became a Lieutenant in the National Army, presumably the
hairdressing business did not survive. For more information on James
