with another typed campaign speech andprepared remarks for aTVpanel
appearance. 3 items, 32pages,withminor amendments and annotations almost
certainly inhis hand as senate candidate.
In1952, JFK ran for theU.S. Senate against popular incumbent,HenryCabot
Lodge,whomhedefeatedby70,000votes, at a timewhen the republicanpresi-
dential candidate, Eisenhower sweptMassachusetts.
The issues outlined - immigration, jobs,war - have a remarkable resonance 61
years on and are interesting reading in this series of cleverly crafted, original,
annotated, historic speeches.

The IrishWhiteCrosswas founded towards the endof 1920. Itsmainobjectwas
to copewith the distress of families of thosewhowere caught up in the fight for
Irish freedomagainst theBritishArmedForces.The fundswerealsoemployed to
aidexpelledCatholicworkers from theNorth.Active in itsorganisationwereMi-
chael Collins andArthurGriffith (prior to their death), GeorgeRussell,Mrs Ea-
monnCeannt,Mrs Sheehy-Skeffington,MaudGonneMacBride,MadameO’Ra-
hilly, Erskine Childers, Darrel Figgis, Brian O’Higgins, Edward MacLysaght,
William T. Cosgrave, Erskine Childers, etc. etc. Themajor contributions came
fromprivateAmerican sources (£1,250,000), John,CountMcCormack (£35,000),
with lesser amounts from private English, Scottish andCanadian sources. Pope
Benedict XV gave £5,000. The accounts in this report show that it had collected
£1,374,795. Scarce.

A Pass for the Memorial Meeting to pay tribute to the Irishmen Denis Coady,
FrankConroy, Jas.Meehan,Daniel Boyle, andWilliamBeattie…killed inSpain
defendingdemocratic liberty. The venuewas theEngineers’Hall,DawsonStreet
on Friday, February 19 at 8pm. No year (c.1940). Yellow card printed in black.
7.5 x 11.5 cm. The Spanish CivilWar lasted from July 1936 toApril 1939. Both
sides in theSpanishCivilWar attractedparticipants from Ireland. EoinO’Duffy
formed a corps of 750 who supported General Francisco Franco’s Nationalists
aided and abetted by Irish RomanCatholic clergy who reacted to the extensive
massacreofCatholicclergyby theRepublicans.The InternationalBrigade fought
against Franco and was made up of volunteers from Britain, the United States,
France and320 Irishmen aquarter ofwhomwerekilled in action.
