TheDeclarationof Irish IndependenceOfficial EnglishTranslation.
Historic Pronouncement of Ireland’s Freedom from English Rule,
made at the firstmeeting ofDáil Eireann (Ireland’s RepublicanPar-
liament) in the Mansion House Dublin, on Tuesday January 21st,
1919, royal octavo, 3 pp (single folded sheet) some finger marks &
folding crease on verso. An extremely rare document. The declara-
tion states that ‘whereas the Irishpeople is by right a freepeople: and
whereas for seven-hundredyears the Irishpeoplehasnever ceased to
repudiate andhas repeatedlyprotested in arms against foreignusur-
pation... Now thereforewe, the elected representatives of the ancient
Irish people inNational Parliament, Assembled, do, in the name of
the IrishNation, ratify the establishment of the Irish Republic and
pledge ourselves and our people to make this declaration effective
by everymeans at our command... ‘ The declarationwas adopted by
acclamation, as the first substantive business on the first day’smeet-
ingof TheFirstDail, when the SinnFeinM.P.s. elected at theBritish
GeneralElectionof1918 (thosenot in jail)met&declared themselves
tobe Ireland’s sovereignParliament. Thisdocumentwas vehemently
