theHowth gun-running, andwas one of the first to board the yacht and beginunloading guns. He became
Vice-Commandant of theDublinBrigadeof theFianna.OnEasterMonday1916, heoccupied theMendicity
InstitutiononUshers Islandat theheadofhisCompany, andheld ituntilWednesdayafternoon,whenhe sur-
rendered to superior forces.Hewasexecuted inKilmainham Jailon8May1916, aged25years.Thememorial,
by the sculptorLaurenceCampbell, is cut fromKilkenny limestone.

AlthoughDeValeraorderedRepublicans todump their arms inApril 1923, hundreds ofRepublicanprison-
erswere still detained inpoor conditions through the summer and autumn. InOctober 1923, over 400men
inMountjoy Jail went on hunger strike seeking unconditional release. Prisoners in other jails (including
women) joined the strike, and it became amajornational confrontation. TheFree StateGovernment refused
toyield, and twomendiedbefore the strikewas calledoff after 41days (after an appeal byCardinal Logue).
Thesedailybulletinsarevery rare.They includebriefbiographiesofmen thought tobeclose todeath, includ-
ingErnieO’MalleyandBrianO’Higgins.No. 24 includesnewsof the firstdeath (DenisBarryofCork).No. 27
carries the news of the endof the strike; also the seconddeath (AndyO’SullivanofMallow). The final issue
includesa reassessmentofRepublicanpolicy. “Thecessationofwarfaredoesnotmeanacceptanceof theFree
State. Though armed resistance was, and is, constitutional, it is no longer expedient. It has been definitely
abandoned, andpassivenon-military resistance takes its place”.
