SirGeorgeOtto Trevelyanwas the sonof thenotorious SirCharlesTrevelyan
whoadministered famine relief in Ireland.Healsoplayeda role in Irishaffairs
following the vacancy causedby the assassinationof Sir FrederickCavendish,
when he rose to Cabinet rank as Chief Secretary. The 8.5” x 11” black and
white engraving is titledTheRightHonourableGeorgeOttoTrevelyan, chief
secretary for Ireland, PresentedGratiswith “The BelfastWeekly Post” 6th of
Jany1883.Thecontentof the twomain letters is interesting.The firstdealsex-
tensivelywith politics “the late government…………. Possessed an influence
over theworking classes….. I believe that ifGladstone andhis colleagues had
applied theirmind and energies toput a stop to this in turnmay signwarfare
of labour and capital……..” The second, deals withMcCauley’s poetry and
