This document is amemorial or petitionbyone, JohnDuncan, TideWaiter, aboardThe
Betty, docked atDublinPort for an eye injurydescribed ingraphicdetail. Whenwriting
memorials itwas apractice todescribe ingreat detail the catastrophe, hoping thereby to
gain sympathy for apensionormeans of support.
The fact thatDuncan’smemorialwas submitted to theLordLieutenant suggests that the
shipwas aPacquet shipused to carryofficial papers andunder the jurisdictionof the
LordLieutenant. TheDukewas particularlynoted for conviviality and toured themajor
Ascendancyhouseswithparticular relish. Hedied at his residence in thePhoenixPark
aged33 inOctober 1787. Accompaniedby engraved explanatorybrass plaque andnote.

from8thMay1919whenassigned to theDauntless, to final entry12th July1920. ; hismedals
including a 1914-15 Star, BritishWarMedal 1914-20&VictoryMedal; a scoll commemorat-
ing service inWWII; A lightharded proclamation to certifyGaffney had come aboard and
become a ‘loyal subject’ on ‘his BritannicMajesty’s Light Cruiser “Dauntless”’, dated 15th
December 1923, colouredwith imageofH.M.S.Dauntless, 43x34cm;
StanislanseGoffneywas born inDublin in1891, died in theMaterHospital in1945 andwas
buried inGlasnevin Cemetery. The Dauntless was a light cruiser built in Palmers, in Jar-
row-on-Tyne, UK. The shipwas ordered in September 1916 and commissionedon the 26th
November 1918. In1919 shewas assigned tooperate in theBalticSeaagainst revolutionaries
inRussia.
The diary is an interesting and personal account his time aboard The Dauntless. Divided
into four parts. The first part is theBaltic cruise andhehighlights uncertainties that existed
aboutGermany signing thePeaceTreaty - “willGermany sign today? Wemakepreparations
forwar again. All ships cleared for action”.
Other entries read: 5th November “we opened fire the Germans are about 15 miles from
the town of Liban and are in considerable force, whilst the Letts opposing them are amere
handful anddevoidof guns.” and July12thwhile theDauntlesswas an escort to theKingon
theUK cruise, “theKing racedhis yacht Britannica and came in first, easilyunderstood!”
