seem a long step from themajesticmountains and scenic beautyof the area
to theMother of Parliaments, but following aparticularlybrutalmurder
and a seemingmiscarriage of justice this iswhat
happened.

The Anglo-IrishWar began with the Soloheadbeg ambush of 21 January
1919. SeanHoganwas one of those who took part.When he was captured
some months later, his comrades in the 3rd Tipperary Brigade of Volun-
teerswere determined to rescue him.On 13May they intercepted a train at
Knocklong station, where an armedRIC partywas takingHogan for trial.
In the ensuing gunbattle a constablewas killed andDanBreenwas severe-
ly wounded, but Hogan was rescued unharmed. The echoes of the battle
spread across Irelandwithindays.
