HarryKernoff (1900-1974), artist, was born in London, son of a Russian father and
Spanishmother. In1914 the familymoved toDublin,wherehe studied at theMetro-
politanSchool ofArt andwon theTaylor Scholarship in1923.Hebeganhisworking
lifeasawoodworker inhis father’s furniturebusiness, and this ledhim to theproduc-
tion of woodcuts. During his career ofmore than fifty years he paintedmost of the
literary figures ofDublin, including Joyce andYeats, andmanyof thepeople ofDun
Chaoin and theBlasket Islands. Three collections of hiswoodcutswere published in
limited editions.
