A RARE LIMERICK HELMET SHAPED CREAM JUG,
makers mark only, that of Joseph Johns c.1750, with waved
serrated rim, double scroll handle, central reeded girdle and raised
on three lion mask capped and tail wrapped feet. 11.5cm high
The bottom with contemporary initials “I * M U” and with scratch
weight “7oz”
The emergence of these two undocumented pieces that have been
in the same family since their creation, is a major addition to the
corpus of extant Limerick silver.
The Quaker graveyard at Ballinacarra, Limerick records the
presence of a Quaker community that settled in Limerick in 1654.
The graveyard was presented to the Society of Friends by Joseph
Massey Harvey who had acquired it from Margaret Unthank the
widow of Thomas Unthank from a Quaker family long established
in Limerick in the medical profession.
