A RARE LIMERICK PLAIN HEMISPHERICAL BOWL
ON FOOT,
mark of Joseph Johns of Limerick, c.1749-50, with stepped and
moulded rim, with contemporary initials “I*M U” (c.6ozs, with a
scratch weight of “10oz.10d”). 12cm diameter, 7cm high
Note, it is thought that these initials are for Isaac and Martin
Unthank, a Limerick Quaker family. The discrepancy of the scratch
weight which appears to be contemporary with the actual weight is
probably explained, that this piece was originally a sugar bowl and
would have had a cover (see Bennett Collecting Irish Silver, 1984,
pg. 29, plate 13)
Provenance: by family descent
€2000 - 3000
