AN IRISH CARVED MAHOGANY SIDE TABLE, C.1760,
with moulded rectangular top above a shaped apron, with central asymmetric shell, flanked by panels of trailing vine, the
moulded rim terminating in rosettes, the sides similar, on acanthus capped cabriole legs with square claw feet and leaf carved
hocks, with the later trade label of “
M. Butler Ltd., Upper Abbey St., Dublin
”. 63cm deep, 123cm wide, 78cm high
Note: A slightly larger table manifestly by the same hand is illustrated in Glin & Peill, Irish Furniture, no 96 p229. This table was
sold at Christies ‘A Knight in Ireland’ 7/5/2009, lot no 116 (£60,000).
Glin & Peill suggest the carving represents ivy sacred to Apollo, but a more obvious interpretation is vine tendrils sacred to
Bacchus and suitable to the conviviality of a supper room
Provenance: Laidlaw Collection, formerly at Somerton
€20000 - 30000
