Last and InspiringAddress of ThomasMacDonagh. No printer, no date, but 1916. Single
quarto sheet printed one side only. Laiddown on a backing page.With: An original post-
cardof ThomasMcDonagh (Commandant of BishopStreetArea) executedMay3rd, 1916.
With: Anoriginal Christmas cardquoting a verse byWilliamRooney ‘TheDeadwhoFell
for Freedom’, Grave, grave, their names on high’. Oval portrait of McDonagh surround-
ed by a laurel wreath, draped tricolour with crossed pikes in background. With another
broadside. Rare. (4)
“Gentlemen. I accept your sentencewith joy and pride since it is for Ireland I am to die ..
Takeme away, and letmybloodbedew the sacred soil of Ireland. I die in the certainty that
oncemore the seedwill fructify”. The authenticity of this document has beenquestioned,
but the tone and sentiments seem to us entirely consistent withMacDonagh’s. Typescript
copies were inRIChands very soon afterMacDonagh’s court-martial, so it canhardly be
aRepublican invention, and it is inconceivable that anyBritish sourcewouldhave forged a
document containing suchdignified, unpalatable andprophetic sentiments
