posed to the Patriot. Amedical student inDublin, KevinBarrywas arrested in September
1920after takingpart inan IRAambush inwhich threeBritish soldierswerekilled.Though
‘just a ladof eighteen summers’, hewas sentenced todeathandhanged, allegedlyafterbeing
tortured in an attempt to secure information about his comrades. (3)

COLBERT,Cornelius.
A rare photograph of Cornelius Colbert, seated and inVolunteer uniform, probably byKe-

Cornelius “Conn” Colbert (1888-1916) was born inAthea, County Limerick, and educated
at theChristianBrothers school. Colbertwas employed first as a clerk at the railway station
inLimerick and later, when the familymoved toDublin, in theoffices ofKennedy’sBakery.
Conn became a drill instructor at St. Enda’s School, founded by Pádraig Pearse, while a
member of FiannaÉireann.
In 1913 he was an earlymember of the IrishVolunteers. He also joined the Irish Republi-
canBrotherhood. In theweeks leadingup to theRising, he acted as bodyguard for Thomas
Clarke.
For his part in the 1916 Easter Rising, he was shot by firing squad in KilmainhamGaol,
Dublin, on8May, 1916.

CONNOLLY, James.

with thephotographer’s embossed stamp. 10.2x14.5cm. Rare.
James Connolly (1868-1916), born in Edinburgh of Monaghan parents. Ex British Army,
married aWicklow lass. Came to Ireland in 1896 and founded ‘TheWorker’s Republic’, the
first Irish socialistnewspaper.Organised, trainedandwasCommandantof the IrishCitizen
Army. When the secret military council of the I.R.B. called for an armed rising in 1916,
Connollywas part of theorganising team alongwithPearse andMcDonagh.He command-
ed the volunteers in the G.P.O. on EasterMonday and he was one of the seven signatories
of the Proclamation. During the action in theG.P.O. hewas badlywounded. Captured and
court-martialled, hewas executedby firing squad inKilmainham,while tied toachair ashe
couldnot stand.Hiswritings are an invaluable sourceon the labourmovement in Ireland.
