CathalBrugha (1874-1922), revolutionary. BornCharlesWilliamSt JohnBurgess, educatedatBelvedereCollege;
had to leave there at sixteenwhenhis father’s business failed. He joined theGaelic League in 1899 and became
lieutenant in the IrishVolunteers in1913.During theRisinghewas second incommandat SouthDublinUnion,
where he was severely wounded, and lamed for the rest of his life. He took a leading role in theWar of Inde-
pendence, becameChief of Staff of the I.R.A., vehementlyopposed theTreaty and voted against it.He fought in
O’Connell Street on theRepublican side anddied fromwounds received there.

JohnDevoy and JudgeDaniel Cohalanwere leading figures in the Friends of Irish Freedom organisation. The
aim of the organisationwas to foster ‘anymovement that will tend to bring about the National Independence
of Ireland’. DiarmuidLynch (1878-1950) was born at Tracton, CountyCork, and spentmuch of his early life in
America. Through his membership of the IRB he had come into contact with JohnDevoy. He was appointed
National Secretary of the F.O.I.F. at the Second IrishRace Convention inMay 1918. Thanks, in no small part,
to Lynch’s organisational abilitymembership of the F.O.I.F. rapidly rose to 50,000, a three-fold increase in six
months.

was the photo of DeValera used inmost newspapers immediately after the Rising, presumably released by his
family.This is in itsoriginal state; probablyvery fewcopieswereprepared in this state, sinceDevwasnot apublic
