BANTRY HOUSE
A set of six professionally taken photographs of the interior and
exterior of Bantry House, 19th Century,each 24 x 29cm.
Lady Olive White daughter of William White 3rd Earl of
Bantry, married Arthur Guinness and the reception was held at
Bantry House 16th February 1871. It is likely that the present
photographs are a record of the house at that time.
An invaluable record, the house having since being
systematically denuded of the spectacular collections formed
by the 2nd Earl of Bantry (1800-1868), of significant note is the
positioning of “Erminia and the wounded Tancred”, over the
mantel piece (now Accedemia, Venice) and “Charles and Ubaldo
resisting the enchantments of Armida’s nymphs”, over the door
(now National Gallery, Washington) from the set of eight by
Giovanni Antonio and Francesco Guardi. See Peter Murray,
“Crusades in Arts, Irish Arts Review Vol. 31, no.2” which
explains the dodgy circumstances of their removal.
