Note: this picture compares very closely to that by Van der Hagen offered by The Cynthia O’Connor Gallery for the Irish Antique Dealers Fair, 1994. However
a problem arises due to a post-mortem date incorporated in the monogram which is obviously authentic. A suggestion arrived at is that there was a younger
generation of Van der Hagens, also stage set painters, who produced pastiches of their father’s works and indeed the present lot may stimulate reattribution of
works currently given to Van der Hagen senior.
