THE ROYAL DUBLIN SOCIETY PRESENTATION CASKET TO
LORD ARDILAUN 1914
A silver embellished mahogany casket with outset corners, on plinth base, fitted with a silk-lined
drawer containing an album stamped, Walker & Co., Dublin, with an illuminated address of
the first quality and the signatures of the members of the Society in an elaborate green morocco
binding with, in gilt, the arms of the Society and bands of Celtic revival ornament, the top with
oval panel embossed with the arms of the society, inscribed “Presented to their Past President, the
Rt. Hon. Lord Ardilaun by Members and Associates of The Royal Dublin Society” and supporting
a replica of the R.D.S. mace, of the highest workmanship, the corners applied with emblems of the
Four Provinces, the sides with armorial wreaths, the back with the Lee-Guinness Baronial arms
and the drawer with banded leaf handle. 47cm wide, 30cm deep; the mace 37cm
The silver work Dublin 1914, makers mark of West & Son, the casket likely to have been made by
James Hicks. This was presented to Lord Ardilaun at St. Anne’s, just before his death in 1915.
