155 A RED CROSS ZEPPELIN WIRE TOKEN,

adapted as a brooch attached to to a Red Cross card and indicating ‘From the first

Zeppelin brought down at Cuffley Essex Sept 3rd 1916’.

The Schütte-Lanz SL - 11 was one of 16 airships taking part in what was then the

biggest raid of the FirstWorldWar. It was the first German airship to be shot down

while bombing England, at Cuffley, Essex by LieutenantWilliam Leefe Robinson. He

was awarded aVictoria Cross for his bravery in action.

The Zeppelin pieces that survived were given to the British Red Cross by H.M.

war office to raise funds for the war effort particularly to aid those who had been

wounded at the front.

The safety-pin brooch cost two shillings and sixpence.They were sold on ‘Our Day’,

an annual national fundraising event, and by November 1916.

together with a Queen Elizabeth coronation goblet , engraved and dated to 1953

the base engraved‘Whitefriars No. 698’ (2)

153 FREE STATE IRISH TRICOLOUR FLAG,

circa 1920s, in three panels handstitched with rope socket machine stitched to one

side.Very good condition. 74cms x 136cms;

together with a Eucharistic Congress 1932, a large blue linen Flag, folded and white

stitched borders and attached rope support, the centre with a stencilled cross in

yellow depicting the 1932 Eucharistic Emblem, approx. 169 x 89cm, some fading

and tearing, w.a.f. (2)
