57 HABERMANN, FRANÇOIS XAVIER

View of the British entering NewYork

Handcoloured engraving, platemark 31.5 x 42.5cm, from a series called “Collection des Prospects,” popularly known as “Vues d’ Optique,” published by

engraver François Xavier Habermann in Augsburg in 1776.With text “L’EntreTriumphale DeTroupes Royales a NouvelleYorck” below the image.

Together with another 18th century handcoloured engraving titled “Le Débarquement des Francois, pour l’establishment de la nouvelle colonie, dans le

port de la nouvelle Caynne ou la France Equinoxialle”, 30 x 43cm, from a drawing executed by a Spanish Officer in 1762,

Many of the “Vues d’ Optique” were imaginative, crude, and inaccurate, although some were very well done. The letters above the text were deliberate-

ly reversed since these prints were designed for viewing in optical machines with a magnifying glass and a reflective mirror, which gave the viewer an

illusion of depth and reversed the image.
