MacDiarmada (1884-1916), Patriot and Signatory of the Proclamationwas born at Kiltyclogher, Co. Leitrim. After a formal edu-
cationhe emigrated to Scotlandwhere heworked at a varietyof jobs inGlasgow.On returning to Irelandheworked as a barman
in Belfast, through his friendshipwith Bulmer Hobson he joined the I.R.B. and became a full-time organiser for Sinn Féin. He
was co-founder of ‘IrishFreedom’ whichhe edited for a time. A attackof polio in 1912 left him crippledbut he still continued to
work for the I.R.B.MacDiarmada became an influential figure in the IrishVolunteers andwas co-optedonto the secretmilitary
council at Clarke’s suggestion, to plan a rebellion. Hewas amember of the Provisional Government of the IrishRepublicwhich
wasdeclaredonEasterMonday.He fought alongwithhis colleagues in theG.P.O. until thebuildingwasburned.Hewas executed
on12May, 1916. Rare.

orMay 1919. Terence is standingwhile his wife is seatedwith baby on her lap.Mounted on thick cardwith ‘Excelsion Studio, 1,
CoburgSt., Cork’ embossed at bottom. Someminor spotting, otherwise verygood.Amost attractivephotograph, apparentlyun-
published. Photographs showingMacSwineywithhis familyarevery rare.Hewas in jailwhenhisdaughterwasborn in June1918,
andwas releasedonhumanitarian grounds only inMarch1919, to supportMuriel through a severe attackof influenza. Probably
thisphotographwas takenas soonas shewaswell enough tobeupandabout.Afterhis releaseMacSwiney spentmuchof his time
travelling onVolunteer business and to collectmoney for theDáil Loan; for security reasons he rarely slept at home, andMuriel
told friends shehardly ever sawhim.
