The recipient may perhaps be a relative of Michael Mallin
(but differently spelt), a Citizen Army member who was
shot after the Rising. TomClarke’s signature is rare, as he
spentmost of his adult life inprisonor in theUnitedStates.

An engraved Fenian Bond, denomination FiveDollars. Is-
sued in the name of The IrishRepublic, NewYork, March
17th, 1856. With engraved signature of the Fenian leader,
John O’Mahony. Printed in three colours with a fine en-
gravedoval portrait ofWolfeTone and a vignette ofHiber-
nia with a harp, wolfhound, and a Union soldier looking
across the sea to Ireland.Minorwear to edges, otherwise in
verygood condition
JohnO’Mahony (1816-1877) Fenian, was born inKilbene-
hy, Co. Limerick andwas educated at T.C.D. He joined the
Young Irelanders and took part in the attempted rising of
1848. After the skirmish at Ballingarry, O’Mahony fled to
France and after several years of poverty, he joined John
Mitchel inNewYork. In 1858, in associationwithMichael
Doheny and James Stephens, he formed the FenianBroth-
erhood, later known as the IrishRepublicanBrotherhood.
