ThomasAshe (1885-1917), Republican, was born at Kinard, Lispole, nearDingle, Co. Kerry, the fourth
son ina familyof sevenboysand threegirlsborn toGregoryAshe, farmer, andhiswifeEllen (néeHana-
fin). He was educated at Ardmore School and De La Salle Training College, Waterford. After a brief
spell teaching atMinardCastle, Co. Kerry, he became amaster at Corduff national school near Lusk,
Co.Dublin.Active in theGaelicLeagueand the IrishVolunteers, he supported JamesLarkinduring the
Lock-Out in1913andwas alsoaclose friendof SeánO’Casey.During theEasterRisinghe led localVol-
unteers atAshbourne,Co.Meath.Court-Martialled forhis role, hewas sentenced to life imprisonment.
Following theGeneralAmnestyof 1917hewas releasedandbecamea leading republicanpropagandist.
He campaigned for De Valera in the East Clare by-election, and was arrested inAugust and charged
with inciting the civil population forwhichhewas sentenced to two years imprisonment. After failing
to securepolitical status for SinnFéinprisoners inMountjoy, heorganised ahunger-strike anddiedon
25thSeptemberwhilebeing forcibly fed.
