1777:The US Congress adopts a new flag for independent America –
the stars and stripes.
No maker, London, dated the first year in which the city
hallmarks included the king’s head. It was originally a sugar
boat in the Adam style but, fitted with a lead liner for its
subsequent use, was presumably presented by a Dublin
merchant when the Church of Saint Michael and Saint
John was built in 1793.This was the proud possessor of the
first Catholic Church bell to be heard in the city since the
relaxation of the Penal Laws and had been erected in Essex
StreetWest on the site of the Smock AlleyTheatre, part of
which was incorporated in the structure. In recent years
with the decline in the parish population, it has taken on a
new existance as a museum.
1784:The US RevolutionaryWar ends with the US Congress of the
Confederation ratifying theTreaty of Paris.
