172 SIR JOHN MAFFEY’S DUBLIN OVERCOATA fine heavy full-length gentleman’s black woollen tailored winter overcoat, for-
merly the property of Sir John Maffey, United Kingdom representative in Ireland
1939-1949. With label of J.B. Johnstone Ltd. of Dublin dated 1942, inscribed with
Maffey’s name and decorations, sewn inside inner breast pocket, and with his card (as
Lord Rugby) in an outside pocket.
Sir John Maffey [1877-1969], later first Baron Rugby, was a key player in Anglo-Irish
relations during the SecondWorldWar and afterward. His diplomatic reports to
Churchill struck a more moderate tone than those of the American envoy, David
Gray, and he had a good working relationship with DeValera and his successors.
Maffey was effectively the British Ambassador, though not given that title initially
because of sensitivities about the Free State’s diplomatic standing.
The coat, still in excellent condition, is of a quality which would be difficult to find
nowadays.
