102 MAJOR WILLIAM REDMOND A PARIAN WARE BUST OF WILLIAM REDMOND,

probably Copeland, dressed in military attire, raised on circular socle base 41cm high

MajorWilliam Hoey Kearney Redmond was born inWexford in 1861.

He was an Irish Nationalist, Politician, lawyer and soldier. His elder brother, John Redmond became leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party.

Willie joined the Irish Land League and was arrested for seditions literature and was imprisoned in Kilmainham Jail for three months - sharing a cell with Parnell.

At the age of 53Willie Redmond was one of the first of the NationalistVolunteers to sign for the army. He was commissioned as a Captain in his former regiment and

went to theWestern Front in the winter of 1915/16.

At the battle of Messines Ridge he was one of the first out of the trenches and was hit almost immediately.

MajorWilliam Redmond Died aged just 56 years old.

INA memorandum attached to his will he wrote “ I should like all my friends to know that in joining the Irish Brigade and going to France, I sincerely believed., as all

Irish soldiers do, that I was doing my best for the welfare of Ireland”.
