OnMondaySeptember 19, Robert Emmetwasput on trial forHighTrea-
son. The Jury returned a guiltyverdict andwithout leaving thebox, Lord
Norburypresidingpronounced sentenceof deathonhim.Hewashanged
the followingmorning. Robert Emmet is one of the founding fathers of
the Irish republic and alsooneof its favourite sons. Inhis famous Speech
for theDock,Emmet epitomised the ideaof an Irish identity that couldbe
‘Protestant, Catholic andDissenter’. This was of immense value, and for
Protestants in the Irish state, Emmet offered an example of how religion
didnot have to, and shouldnot have to, determine your Irishness.
