BulmerHobson (1883-1969), IrishNationalist and a leadingmember of the IRB,was born
in Belfast and foundedNa Fianna Eireann there in 1903. He was sworn into the IRB by
DenisMcCullough; they joinedotheryoungmen includingSeanMacDermott andPatrick
McCartan. In1906 they founded theDungannonClubs, another frontorganisation for the
IRB. Itsmouthpiecewas ‘TheRepublic’, establishedbyHobson inDecember, 1906, which
published severalwriters associatedwithBigger and theUlsterTheatre. InMay, 1907 ‘The
Republic’mergedwith theDublin journal ‘ThePeasant’, editedbyW.P.RyanwithHobson
as deputy editor. When the Dungannon Clubs merged with Griffith’s Sinn Fein shortly
afterwards,HobsonbecameVice-President of theorganisation.Hewas later elected to the
supreme council of the IRB andwas a particular friend of Thomas Clarke, who idolised
him as thenew JohnMitchel andhoped that he couldonedaywinoverUlsterProtestants
to separatism.Hobson sworePádraigPearse into the IRB in 1913but opposed theRising.
He took little or nopart inpolitics after 1916 and became a civil servant in the Free State
Government.
