90 60 JAMES FRANCIS DANBY (1816-1875) Boatmen Along the Aegean Coast at Sunset Signed and dated (18)’68 Oil on canvas, 46 x 75cm € 6,000 -8,000 The eldest son and pupil of Francis Danby, James Francis Danby exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1849 to 1871, as well as at the British Institution and the Society of British Artists. Joining the Society of British Artists, James was inspired by the style of his father, but his career was particularly successful in his coastal scenes (Strickland, A Dictionary of Irish Artists ). These works are largely inspired by travels to France, Italy, and Switzerland.
