www.adams.ie 89 Irish Old Masters| 5 November 2024 59 WILLIAM PENGREE SHERLOCK (FL.1801-1850) Landscape with Bathers; On the Arno A pair, oils on canvas, each 21 x 31.5cm Provenance: Collection of the late Christopher Williams, 71 Eardley Crescent, London (inscrip- tion verso) William Pengree Sherlock, painter and draughtsman, was the son of Dublin born miniaturist, prize fighter, and fencing master, William Sherlock (fl.1759-1806). Sherlock was a painter of topographical scenes, exhibiting nine times at the Royal Academy between the years 1801 and 1810, and, as these examples highlight, a successful imitator of the works of the celebrated Welsh landscape painter, Richard Wilson (1713-1782).
