Camden Rd Villas’) on stretcher rail verso Exhibited: Royal Academy, London, 1853, no. 1228 € 6,000 - 8,000 Although widely regarded as a prolific watercolourist, Francis Danby’s fourth and youngest son, Thomas Danby, de - voted much of his early career to the painting of topographic views in oil, primarily of North Wales, where he became very familiar with the local landscape after living in the region. Thomas’s paintings differ from his father’s Romantic landscapes to explore precise depictions rooted in nature. One of his most successful works in this field was How Shepherds Lose Their Sheep , exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1853. Strickland described Thomas as being ‘an accomplished painter, renowned for his cloudscapes and Fall of Snow . A preparatory work for How Shepherds Lose Their Sheep forms part of the collection of the National Trust, and is on view at Croesawdy, a Victorian country house near the town of Rothbury. In addition to being dated 1853, a label on the back identifies the landscape as Llyn Cwrych, Dolgellau, in Wales.
