George IV arrived at Howth after an
uncomfortable crossing very much the
worse for wear from drink. The highlight
of his trip was his visit to Slane and its
chatelaine, the plump and companionable
Marchioness Conyngham. Neither the
monarchy nor the government capitalised
on the manifest enthusiasm displayed by
the populace towards the visit.
