DANIEL MACLISE R.A. (IRISH, 1806 - 1870)
Study for The Veiled Prophet of Khorassan
Watercolour on paper, 42cm x 32.5cm, mid 19th Century.
Three other variations of this piece by Maclise are on display at
the Victoria & Albert Museum. The subject matter is taken from
the scene `Mokanna unveiling to Zeliea`, from the first poetic tale
in poet THOMAS MOORE`s (1779 - 1852) book, `Lalla Rookh`,
published 1817, which narrates the story of Hakim ben Allah,
founder of an Arabic sect in the 18th Century; veiled to cover his
wartime disfigurements. The finished painting is believed to be
Maclise`s first exhibit at the R.A., in 1833, when Lalla Rookh was
also on display at the British Institute.
