The Judgment of Paris
Stipple engraving, oval, 36 x 45cm
“Paris, the son of Priam, King of Troy, and Hecuba. At the
marriage of Peleus and Thetis, the goddess of discord, who had
not been invited, showed her displeasure on by throwing among
the assembled gods a golden apple on which was written, “for
the fairest”. When the contestants had been reduced to three -
Juno, Minerva and Venus - Paris was called upon to decide. Juno
promised him a kingdom. Minerva, military glory; Venus offered
him the fairest woman in the world. Paris awarded the prize to
Venus. She took him to Greece and persuaded Helen to go away
with him.”
