A GREEK SILVER BOAT-SHAPED DISH
by Ilias Lalaounis, marked .925, the design is inspired by the Ilias Collec-
tion, the shaped hammered body with double lipped sides and twin ring
side handles. 23.5cm side, 12.5cm wide over handles
The technique of hammering metal was widely used by Ancient Greek
goldsmiths, it revived in the Lalaounis workshops in the late 60’s.
‘ilias LALAoUNIS’ was opened in 1941 by a fourth generation goldsmith
of the same name. Renowned for redefining classical Greek jewellery from
eras such as the Byzantine and Hellenistic periods in a modern way, by us-
ing both ancient and current techniques. His jewellery has been seen on the
likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Jackie Kennedy Onassis. In 2003 a museum
was opened in Athens devoted to his jewellery and decorative arts, the
museum houses his past collections and a history of Greek jewellery. Ilias
passed away in 2013 and the business is now run by his four daughters.
