AN IRISH PROVINCIAL GEORGE III POINT-HANDLED SILVER
TABLE SPOON
mark probably that of John Williams (b.1771-d.1806) of Cork, marked “STER-
LING” c.1795, the tapering handled with neoclassical bright cut engraved
decoration and engraved with initials (c.2ozs). 24.5cm long
Silversmiths John Williams, John Warner and James Warner were all working in
Cork around the end of the 18th century. As the marks were not being registered
in Cork, it may be that the mark ascribed to John Williams was used by one of
the Warners and vice versa. However in light of the probable date of this spoon,
circa 1795 it is very likely to belong to John Williams.
John Williams served his apprenticeship under Carden Terry (exact dates
unknown) and it is thought that he worked independently between c.1791-
1795, and used the “IW” makers mark between those four years. John Williams
married Jane Terry, Carden Terry’s daughter, in 1791 and received Freedom of
Cork in 1795. Around 1795 John Williams and Carden Terry formed a business
partnership and used the mark “T&W”.
