Robert Gray began to work in Glasgow 1776 when he became
a freeman. He opened a new business in 1802 under the name
Robert Gray & Son. The firm used the Edinburgh Assay Office
until 1819, after which and until 1852 their work was assayed
exclusively in Glasgow.
