THOMAS CAVE OF DUBLIN, (FL. 1729-1749)
A brass and steel Surveyor’s Compass or circumferentor, the
dial signed “Thomas Cave, Dublin Fecit”, with brass lugs and
ivory knobs, the dial 13.5cm diameter.
A rare survival of 18th Century Dublin instrument making.
Cave worked as a surveyor of Christ Church c.1740, having
previously surveyed and mapped the site of the proposed
parliament house in 1734. A similar example (National
Museums and Galleries, Merseyside) is illustrated in Burnet/
Morrison-Low London, Vulgar & Mechanick 1989, p.24
