134 260 A PEWTER-LINED COCO BOX AND COVER CHINA, QING DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY It is made of pewter covered with carved coco wood panels. Of circular shape, it has a flat foot and a dome-shaped lid. The coco wood panels are carved in low-relief with the Eight Daoist Immortals Secret as well as with ‘Shòu’ ( 寿 - longevity) characters. The lid, with a slightly recessed central part, is very finely inlaid with bone and mother of pearl to depict a phoenix flying amidst curvy clouds. H: 4,9 cm - D: 11,4 cm Weight: 133,4 grams Note: The Chinese phoenix is a mythical bird known as the fenghuang ( 凤凰 ) in Chinese. It symbolizes joy and peace. L: 29,5 cm Weight: 130 grams Note: The butterfly is a symbol of long life because the second character in butterfly (hudie - 蝴蝶 ) has exactly the same pronunciation as the character 耋 (die) which means ‘“70 or 80 years of age’.
