Fine Asian Art | 28-29 & 30 June 2022 133 Additional information and photographs for all lots can be found at www.adams.ie 257 A LARGE CANTON ENAMEL ‘TWELVE BATS’ BOWLS UNIDENTIFIED SEAL MARK CHINA, POSSIBLY LATE QING DYNASTY It rests on a spread ring foot and has a square shaped body with round corners. The inner part is all covered with a pink enamel and centered by two double gourds or calabash. The outer part is adorned in famille rose enamels with twelve lively bats flying amidst ruyi-shaped clouds against a green ground. The base bears a black-enameled four-character mark in archaistic script. H: 11,5 cm - Side: 19,3 cm Note: A picture of a bat (fu - 蝠 ) can be a visual pun for ‘good fortune’ or ‘happines’s (fu - 福 ) because both characters are pro- nounced ‘fu’. The gourd is popular as a charm symbol to ward off evil spirits and disease because its first character (hulu - 葫 芦 ) has the same pronunciation as the word to ‘protect’ ‘(hu - 护 ) and also the word for ‘blessing’ (hu - 祜 ). € 2,000 - 4,000 258 A FINE ENAMEL ON COPPER PHOENIX AND MANDA- RIN DUCKS’ JARDINIERE OR PLANTER BY THE WORKSHOP OR COMPANY XUYANJI 许燕记 CHINA, GUANGDONG, LATE QING DYNASTY, LATE 19TH CENTURY Of faceted rectangle shape, resting on four short feet or legs. It is adorned with alternating reserved medallions de- picting standing phoenix and a couple of Mandarin ducks, against a lime green ground animated with dark dots and lotus scrolls. The base is inscribed with the mark of the workshop reading as follow: ‘ 粤东省小甫南许燕记造 ’. H: 5,8 cm - L: 15 cm - width: 10,1 cm Note: See a jardiniere with an identical design to its ground displayed as part of the exhibition “Rebirth in China, Canton Enamel Special Exhibition” presented at the provincial Guang- dong Museum, Guangzhou (Canton), China, from 2019/09/24 to 2020/03/29. The cup itself is of round shape. Its outer part is applied with coco wood panels carved in low relief with various auspicious symbols including archaistic bronze vessels and flowered vases.
