After the Sino-Japanese War of 1895 villagers in North China feared the expansion of foreign spheres of influence and resented the extension of privileges to Christian missionaries, who used them to shield their followers. Beginning in 1899, Boxers spread violence across Shandong and the North China Plain, destroying foreign property such as railroads. An Eight Nation Alliance of American, Austro-Hungarian, British, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Russian troops moved into China to tame this rebellion. 中国黑白相片集 拍摄于中国,约 1900 年 € 1,500 - 3,000 254 A CANTON ENAMEL ON COPPER ‘CHRIST’ PILL BOX CHINA, CIRCA 1900-1920 Of circular shape, it rests on a short ring foot and has a round body and a slightly dome-shaped lid.
