Born in Co. Louth, Frances Kelly studied at the Metropolitan school of Art in Dublin and
later for three years in Paris under Léopold Survage. She exhibited at the RHA for the first
time in 1929 and continued to show there until the late 1930s. Kelly had been the first
holder of the Henry Higgins travelling scholarship in 1932. A prominent member of the
Dublin Painters’ Society from the 1940s, she exhibited there as well as the Oireachtas and
Irish Exhibition of Living Art during this period. She also held four one-man shows at the
Dawson Gallery.
