16 Karl Weschke (1925 - 2005)

Coastal Landscape

Charcoal, 56 x 76cm (22 x 30”)

Signed and dated ‘57. Signed again verso

€300 - €500

A German born painter from Thuringia, Weschke was conscripted into the Luftwaffe

while in his teens. Captured in Holland he came to Britain as a prisoner of war. Upon his

release he studied at St. Martin’s College although he was largely self-taught. He later

moved to St Ives, where he exhibited at the Penwith Gallery and in group shows. His

style is rather more figurative than his contemporaries. His work is often concerned with

the female torso. A retrospective was held at the Tate St Ives in 2004.
