Terence P. Flanagan was born in Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh, and studied at the Belfast College of Art. After teaching art at St. Mary’s College of Education for twenty-eight

years and holding the position of Head of Art Department for seventeen, he decided to focus his attention on painting full time. Flanagan was elected an RUA member in

1964 and served as president from 1977-1983. In 1964 he held his first solo exhibition with the Hendriks Gallery in Dublin and he started exhibiting at the RHA the following

year.

In the same year he began his presidential role, the Arts Council Gallery in Belfast mounted a retrospective of his work, and in 1994/5 a major retrospective was held at the

Ulster Museum and travelled to the Hugh Lane in Dublin and the Stadsmuseum in Gothenburg, Sweden. A further retrospective took place at the F.E. McWilliam Gallery &

Studio in 2010, the year before he died.
