A label verso with family crest directs that this
painting was given by Eleanor Palles (nee Plunkett) to
her daughter-in-law Ellen, wife of Lord Chief Baron
Palles (1831-1920)who was the subject of a biography
written by V.T.H. Delany in 1960. A legend of the Irish
Bar, Christopher was educated at Clongowes Wood
College and Trinity College Dublin. He was appointed
Chief Justice at the age of 42.
