464 A LATE 18TH / EARLY 19TH CENTURY ‘CAPTAIN COOK STYLE’ IVORY CHESS SET,

one side stained black, the other side left natural. The King 8cm

tall; together with a 19th Century ebony and ivory inlaid hinge-top

chess box, of square tapering form. 35 x 35cm

This set is based on the design of a set that belonged to the

family of Captain James Cook, a 18th Century British explorer

and navigator. The original set, which is missing one pawn and is

stained red on one side, resides in the National Maritime Muse-

um, London.
