A LATE 18TH CENTURY RARE CORK TORTOISESHELL AND GILT
METAL FUSÉE VERGE OPEN-FACED POCKET WATCH
from the workshop of Ephraim Heritage, the plain circular ceramic dial with Roman
numerals with gold diamond shaped hands, within a gilt metal case and bulls eye glazed
hood, the gilt fusée verge escapement with Tompion Regulator, a decoratively pierced back
clock with an engraved footplate signed Lydia Heritage, Sept 4th 1797, within an openface
veneered tortoiseshell case, with pinwork and gilt gadrooning, diameter approx. 6cm
together with an Art Nouveau watch stand.
Ephraim Heritage was an established and listed watchmaker (Baillies, Britain’s and Loomes)
trading in Cork in the mid to late 18th Century. William Stuart in his list of Irish watch and
clockmakers, he states Ephraim was a Quaker and came from Edenderry, King’s County.
Upon his death in 1793, Lydia Heritage his widow continued the business.

Provenance: Found in the 1930’s by the current owner’s family when they moved into a 19th
Century house in the midlands, the previous owner was a collector of antiquities and had moved
to Ireland from Durham.
