hanging game, the base with gadrooned edge, similarly modelled with fruiting
vines and game, the interior glazed. 28 x 21cm wide; the second similar overall

trailing fruiting vine sways and further game. 30cm wide, 20cm deep (2)
NOTE: “These dishes were made from 1790 as substitutes for
the pastry cases. Great pies of standing crust filled with meat
or game appeared in every well-to-do household until ban-
ished by the Flour Tax levied during the Napoleonic Wars”.
Richard Lovell Edgworth suggested the idea of cane ware pie dishes to Josiah
Wedgwood in a letter of 10 March 1786. Captain Jesse, in his Life of Beau
Brummel Esq. Commonly Called Beau Brummell, 1844 stated ‘The scarcity
two years after Brummel’s retirement, viz in 1800, was so great that consump-
tion of flour for pastry was forbidden in the Royal Household, rice being
used instead. The distillers left off malting and Wedgwood made dishes to
represent piecrust.’ This form, however, seems to have been introduced after
Josiah’s death. They remained in production for many years. In 1851 the list
of exhibits for the Great Exhibition included ‘Oval game pie, cane colour.’
Please note, a similar dish forms part of the collec-
tion at The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.
