John Thomas Hamilton MaCallum was born in Kames, Ar-
gyllshire, Scotland in 1841. At the age of 23, MaCallum went to
London to become a painter, where he entered the Royal Academy.
MaCallum’s favourite subject was sunlight, which can be seen in
his Scottish highland paintings and seascapes, many of which were
painted from a small yacht off the south coast of Devon, Italy and
the Netherlands. MaCallum died suddenly in 1896 from heart
disease.
