The Monarch was a Royal Navy 74 gun Ramillies class
ship of the line. Designed by Sir thomas Slade who was
the leading naval architect of his day, and better known
for his more famous ship Victory. The Monarch was
launched in 1775 at the Royal dockyard at deptford. 168
feet in length Monarch represented the cutting age of
Naval design for her time carrying a mixture of heavy 32
pound cannon and lighter 18 and 12 pound cannon.
The monarchs career spanned some fourty years during
which time she saw action in some of the most famous sea
battles of her time. 1778 the battle of Ushant, the battle
of Cape st Vincent. The relief of Gibralter. 1781 the battle
of Chesapeake bay, 1797 the battle of Camperdown and
the battle of Copenhagen. Monarch eventually came to
rest for the last time at Chatham dock in 1813, later to be
broken up.
